Scope and Contents From the Series: Rose Ethel Bassin was born in Edinburgh of Ukrainian extraction, and studied music under Marjory Kennedy-Fraser and others. She taught in schools in England (1907-1911, 1919-1920), Edinburgh (1915), Newton Stewart (1916-1919), Stornoway (1920-1924) and Skye (1924-1927). During 1927-1934 she lectured in the University of British Columbia. After some time in London she spent the war years teaching in Harris, the Uist and Barra. She moved to Dingwall Academy in 1945, finally becoming Music...

Scope and Contents A small notebook entitled at the front in red ink: "Gaelic songs, collected by A.M.C. Tolmie". The title was subsequently expanded to read "English and Gaelic songs ... Campbeltown Argyllshire". Alexander Tolmie became assistant minister and then successor at the first charge at Campbeltown in 1889. Scope and Contents Many of the pieces are unattributed and many of the rest are poems taken from published sources set to music by members of the Cathcart family and their friends. Several pieces are private compositions being inscribed 'not to be given away' or 'not to be copied'.The book was given by Lieutenant-Colonel Cathcart to his wife in 1835, according to inscriptions in her hand inside the front cover and on the first flyleaf. Scope and Contents Most songs appear to have been carefully copied from printed sources, the general appearance of the words and music resembling printed or engraved pieces, and the publishers' names being equally carefully transcribed.The owner is unidentified, but may have been a resident of Edinburgh (folios 4, 8, 29). Scope and Contents There is an index on folio 1; the songs begin on folio 5.The Scottish songs appear to come mainly from Allan Ramsay's ‘Tea table miscellany’ and David Herd's ‘Ancient and modern Scottish songs’ (1776), though some of the songs may have been picked up by ear, as they include a very debased version of Henry Carey's 'Sally in our alley' (folio 17 verso) and "My heart's in the Highlands" in an apparently unknown version different from that of Burns (folio 81 verso)....

Scope and Contents The volume contains songs sung by John Pritt Harley in productions at the Theatre Royal, Dury Lane, and one at the Lyceum Theatre (folio 54).The songs appear to have been written on a number of gatherings of leaves which were subsequently bound together (folio 20 is narrower than the rest), when the tops of the leaves were trimmed, resulting in some loss to the words of the headings. Two leaves from a printed music book are bound in at folios 63-64, and a leaf has been cut out...
