Printed article `About Polar Glaciation` by John Francis Campbell, published in the ‘Quarterly Journal of the Geological Society’ (November 1874) (folio 1), and a manuscript draft of ‘The Period of Polar Glaciation’, which was apparently unpublished., 1874-1875.
According to a note at the beginning the paper was first written in October 1874 and enlarged upon at frequent intervals until it was finally completed in June 1875.
The text, which is heavily corrected, discusses the effects of glaciation Campbell observed on his travels through America, Japan,
China and Ceylon in 1875.
There is an additional section at the end entitled ‘A Geological Globe’ (folio 147).

Born in Whithorn and educated at St Andrews, Alastair Reid lived in Spain and Latin America for many years, translating from Spanish as well as writing his own poetry and prose. His papers reflect these different kinds of work.
Prose works of Robert Garioch Sutherland., 1938-1981, undated.
Robert Sutherland (1909-1981) who wrote under the name 'Robert Garioch', was educated in Edinburgh and, after the war of 1939-1945 when he was a prisoner in Italy and Germany, became a schoolteacher in Kent. He returned to Edinburgh in 1959, where he taught and worked for the School of Scottish Studies in the University.
