Scope and Contents

The collection consists of manuscript music composed or collected by Lady John Scott (Alicia Anne Spottiswoode of Spottiswoode, died 1900, wife of Lord John Douglas Scott), much of it being in her autograph.

A portion has been partly chewed by mice (folios 14-20), but half the table of contents remains (folio 20) and the name Archibald Murray (folio 20 verso).

The anonymous prelude on inverted folios 11 verso-12 is that attributed in MS.9454, folios 3 verso-4, to [Davis] Mell.

Scope and Contents From the Series: The papers consist of the transcriptions, arrangements, and research notes compiled by John Murdoch Henderson between the mid 1920s and his death in 1972. Henderson's particular interest was in music for the Scottish fiddle, and in addition to extensive work on the older sources of such music, he was an authority on the compositions of his contemporaries, who seem frequently to have sought his advice.
