Each volume contains a number of additional pieces on loose sheets which have been tipped in, but the latter half of each volume is blank.

Scope and Contents The title is taken from folio ii.The manuscript contains many Scottish and some other dance tunes arranged in simple treble notation, followed by an index (page 181).The tunes , which are taken from ‘Caledonian pocket companion’ by James Oswald ([circa 1745-1760]), ‘[First] collection of strathspey reels’ by Niel Gow (1784), and several other printed sources, are numbered in pencil in another hand as far as page 47, and other markings are added in pencil elsewhere....

Scope and Contents The music-book is made up of pages watermarked 1794. The volume contains ballads, dances, and pianoforte pieces from Scotland and various European countries (passim), hymns (folios 22 verso-31), and vocal exercises and scales (folios 22, 32 verso-33 verso, 70-71 verso). Among the more extended pieces are extracts for pianoforte from Méhul's 'Jeune Henri' of 1797 (folio 67 verso), and from an opera 'Paul and Virginia', possibly that produced in London in 1800; and 'Favourite dances at...

Scope and Contents The owner is not known, but was presumably a resident of Edinburgh (folios 30 verso, 31). Eight printed songs and a fragment of a ninth, all datable to the last decade of the eighteenth century, have been tipped in at folios 62-79, which have been cut down to stubs for the purpose. Folios 80-81 also are cut down, but nothing has been attached to them. A march written apparently in the owner's hand is pasted to folio 80. The owner's incomplete pagination has been ignored. Scope and Contents The signature of J Crichton Donaldson has been written on the pastedowns inside both front and back covers and at folio 55.The music book was begun in 1853 and continued until at least 20 September 1855 and contains a large number of tunes, numbered to 1080 (folio 97 verso), followed by more, unnumbered, tunes. Scope and Contents

The music book is gold-stamped 'violin' on the front cover.

Many of the tunes appear to be of late eighteenth- or early nineteenth-century provenance. The volume appears to have been compiled in the mid nineteenth century (cf., for example, folios 41, 47).

The leaves of the volume exhibit much handling, but the identity of the compiler is unknown. The volume is thought to have had a possible Perthshire provenance.

The music book is dated 1816 on folio i. It contains, at the front, dance tunes and other pieces, and at the back, a beginner's musical exercises in pencil, followed by further compositions. The lower part of folio 11 has been cut out, and leaves have been torn out after folio 12 and folio 5 inverted.
