Scope Note: Musical compositions for regulating the movements of a reel; a lively dance, typically in simple or duple time, chiefly associated with Scotland, danced by two couples facing each other and describing a series of figures of eight.

Scope and Contents

Many of the pieces are by Rene Mésangeau, and the manuscript closely resembles in its binding, watermark, and musical hand, a volume prepared after 1632 possibly for a pupil of Mésangeau and now in the Centre National de Recherche Scientifique in Paris - see ‘Oeuvres de René Mésangeau’ (Paris, 1971) edited by Monique Rollin. Other composers represented include Pinel (allemande, folio 33) and Dubut le père (courante, folio 54).

Several tunes are given under names other than those which they usually bear. At folio 1 is a circular letter, undated, of Donald Stuart Macdonald, from Malta, announcing his intention of continuing Angus Mackay's publication.
