Also included are some tunes for the keyboard (folios 38-44 verso). The pieces consist, along with some Scots tunes, of minuets, gavottes, marches, etc., by composers of the day including Thomas Arne, Arcangelo Corelli, William Felton, George Frideric Handel and Johann Adolph Hasse.

Made-up volume, consisting of gatherings of leaves bound up inside two sheets of cardboard.

A bifolium appears to have been removed and replaced by four somewhat smaller leaves (folios 59-62).

The march at folio 6 verso is dated 1901, and that of folio 7 verso was doubtless composed in 1902. Many of the other pieces are dances.

The first 22 pieces (folios 1-37) appear to have been part of a series of at least 25 pieces.

The 'Royal Wedding Quadrille' (folio 38) is dated 1893. Folio 25 is written on the verso of a bill dating from 1910 or later.

Composed or completed in 1913 'to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the foundation of the Carnegie Dunfermline Trust', according to a note tipped in inside the front cover (folio i), and dedicated to its members.

Scope and Contents

Most of the music consists of portions of photostats of his original score (with some amendments in ink) pasted to the leaves of the sheets, with omitted parts and amendments supplied by Percy Grainger. A sheet containing a typed programme note and 'hints to bandmasters' dated 1938 is tipped in at the front. Other notes, both typed and manuscript, are tipped in at the back (folios ii-iv).

Of most tunes, only a few bars are given. On folio iv are verses beginning 'Than what shall be done with this traitor in grain' and 'When fierce Renegado cam first to the toun'. A short 'Inventar of household plenishing' appears on folio 42 verso. The dates 1710, 1729, and 1735 occur on folios 40, 40 verso, and 51.

Scope and Contents From the Series: Archibald Campbell, who entered the Indian Civil Service and retired as Judge of the High Court of Lahore, was the youngest son of John Campbell of Kilberry, and Secretary of the Music Committee of the Piobaireachd Society. The material is arranged tune by tune, approximately in the order of appearance in ‘Ceol mor’ by C S Thomason, and consists of copies of the text of each piobaireachd from all authoritative sources, both printed (including some proof sheets) and manuscript....

A portion has been partly chewed by mice (folios 14-20), but half the table of contents remains (folio 20) and the name Archibald Murray (folio 20 verso).

The anonymous prelude on inverted folios 11 verso-12 is that attributed in MS.9454, folios 3 verso-4, to [Davis] Mell.

The arrangements are for two pianos and three hands (folio 1) and for wind band (folio 19). There is also a printed setting for voices and piano, 1925, with extensive deletions and alterations in the hand of Percy Grainger (folio 48).

It is not clear whether the covers belong to the leaves. Folios 17-22 are additions, stitched to the rest of the volume.

Scope and Contents From the Series: Most of the compositions of G W Crawford are written on a large scale and the collection consists chiefly of full scores, piano reductions and orchestral parts. There are very few drafts or sketches: almost all the compositions are in their final form, and many are in the hands of copyists. Most of the works are undated.
