Interleaved copy of 'The universal Scots almanac, for the year of our Lord M.DCC.LIV' (Edinburgh, 1754), used by Alexander Carlyle's father William Carlyle, minister of Prestonpans, to record details of births and deaths of members of his family on the interleaves., 1754-1805.

Scope and Contents

Following the death of his father, Alexander Carlyle used the almanack to record further details of his family, notes of his published writings, and details of the family of the Duke of Buccleuch. Most of the interleaves are blank.

Scope and Contents

There are numerous corrections by James Augustus Grant on the proofs, most of which have been incorporated into the published work; there is a proof of pages 454-457, 'Explanation of Names and Terms', which were omitted from the published work. The interleaves have been used by Grant at various dates to make corrections and additional comments.

Scope and Contents The manuscript notes are for the greatest part extensive interleavings in the printed volume. Those on the first Title of Part 1 are late copies, probably from Adv.MS.25.3.15, which is also an interleaved volume of the same work, annotated by Lord Royston, similar to this but not identical. There is a letter to Thomas Thomson, Deputy Clerk Register, pasted on the inside of the front cover; a note on the manuscript by George Neilson (folio ii verso); and an index by Neilson (folio 549). Scope and Contents From the Series: Sir David Dalrymple, 3rd Baronet of Hailes, (1726-1792), was the son of Sir James Dalrymple, 2nd Baronet of Hailes, and Lady Christian Dalrymple, daughter of the 6th Earl of Haddington. Sir David was educated at Eton and entered the Inner Temple in 1742. From 1747-1748 he studied Civil Law at Utrecht, and in 1748 was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates.
