Scope and Contents From the Record Group:

Papers, nearly all formal documents, mostly relating to the lands of Foulshields and the families associated with them. The papers are principally those of the Wardrops and their heirs, the Scotts, but also include documents relating to Shaw, Kinloch, Baillie, Weir, and Carmichael families.

Scope and Contents From the Fonds:

Correspondence and papers of the family of Cameron of Fassiefern, collected and preserved by Brodrick Haldane Esq, Edinburgh.

The letters are mostly to members of the Fassiefern family, especially to John Cameron of Fassiefern and his son Sir Ewen, 1st Baronet. Also containing some legal documents and business papers. There are also papers pertaining to the Cameron chiefs Sir Ewen and Donald Locheil.

Scope and Contents From the Fonds: The founder of the family was Gilbert Elliot (1651-1718), a younger son of Gavin Elliot of Midlem Mill. Gilbert Elliot was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates in 1688, created a baronet in 1700, and appointed a Lord of Session as Lord Minto in 1705; he acquired the lands of Headshaw in Roxburghshire in 1696, and added Minto to his property in 1703. Hutton transcripts. A collection of transcripts of the cartularies of Aberdeen Cathedral (Adv.MS.20.3.1) and Newbattle Abbey (Adv.MS.20.3.3) and of charters and other formal documents, many of which are extracts from other cartularies, of and concerning several of the medieval dioceses and religious houses of Scotland.

Scope and Contents

Most of these transcripts and extracts, which were made between circa 1794 and circa 1824, are in the hand of Lieutenant-General G H Hutton: most of the rest are in the same hand as Adv.MS.9A.1.4. Many of the transcripts were made from originals and copies in possession of William Maule of Panmure, who was created Baron Panmure in 1831: many of the rest were copied from documents in possession of Thomas Thomson and at the Scottish Record Office, General Register House.

Scope and Contents From the Fonds:

The Nisbet papers fall into four groups, belonging respectively to the Nisbets of that Ilk, the original owners of the estate; the Kers (later Carres) of Cavers and West Nisbet; who acquired the estate in 1649; the Chisholmes of that Ilk, connected by marriage to Charles St Clair, 15th Lord Sinclair, who succeeded to the estate some time before 1813; and William Molleson, probably related to the sister of Charles St Clair, de jure 13th Lord Sinclair.

Scope and Contents From the Fonds: The papers cover six centuries worth of family and estate papers of the Forbes, the Stuart Forbes, and the Trefusis families. Alexander de Forbes (c.1380-1448) was created the 1st Lord Forbes around 1440, the Lords Forbes of Pitsligo were descended from Sir William Forbes, brother of Alexander. The title was created in 1633 for Alexander Forbes (d.1636).
