Scope and Contents From the Fonds: The papers cover six centuries worth of family and estate papers of the Forbes, the Stuart Forbes, and the Trefusis families. Alexander de Forbes (c.1380-1448) was created the 1st Lord Forbes around 1440, the Lords Forbes of Pitsligo were descended from Sir William Forbes, brother of Alexander. This copy letter book covers a period when James Guild (1810-1893) was trying to establish himself in business. After trying to estabilsh himself in a distilling business on Islay, Guild went to Canada. There are some diary notes as well as copy letters in this volume.

The papers concern: Robert Liston's career as tutor to the sons of Sir Gilbert Elliot; the period from 1771 to 1773 which he spent in applying, unsuccessfully, for various posts; his assisting Gilbert Stuart in editing 'The London Magazine'; and the beginning of his diplomatic career, as secretary to Hugh Elliot in Munich and as Chargé d'Affaires to the Imperial Diet in Ratisbon, 1774-1776.
