Scope and Contents

MSS.7443-7445 are written in German, having been delivered on George Combe's tour in Germany in 1842.

The phrenological reports (MSS.7452-7455) comprise the phrenological measurements of many persons, both well-known and obscure, with reports and descriptions of their mental capabilities and weaknesses.

The papers of Cecilia Combe contain a selection of literary efforts, diaries of tours, and the usual memoranda and inventories kept by nineteenth-century housewives.

Scope and Contents From the Fonds:

William Soutar's output of work, most of it produced during the last thirteen bed-ridden years of his life, is quite remarkable. Apart from his regular and lively correspondence, and his poetry both in English and in Scots, he left a long sequence of diaries and journals, as well as a record of his dreams extending over more than twenty years.

Scope and Contents From the Fonds:

Robert Paul, manager of the Commercial Bank of Scotland, married Charlotte, the daughter of John Erskine of Cambus, advocate, in 1814. The connection of the Pauls with the Erskines of Alva, and later with the Erskine Murrays, remained strong, and the antiquarian interests of the Reverend Robert Paul, Free Church minister at Dollar, led him to examine many of the Erskine papers. Some of these remained with the Paul’s and now form part of the collection.

The work was edited by Alan Bold (Edinburgh, 1984), from a manuscript in Edinburgh University Library and a typescript in the People's Palace Museum, Glasgow. There are sections from several different manuscripts and typescript copies, followed (folio 60) by passages from pages 29-30 and 88-90 of the published text, possibly intended for use in a speech or an article. Also included are some pages on aesthetics in Scotland which do not appear in the edition (folio 66).
