A late eighteenth-century manuscript bearing the signatures 'John Blakey' (page 15) and 'Thomas Wyld' (pages 30, 72), with some additional matter (page i), dated 1818, written perhaps by the James Lomax whose signature is on page 3.

Scope and Contents

The book contains on blank leaves bound in at the back a memorandum (folio 3) and sketches (folios 8 verso, 11 verso, 12 verso) in pencil apparently in Charles Macleod’s hand, and, in another hand in ink, written also on the flyleaves, biographical notes and extracts from printed sources referring to him.

Scope and Contents The manual, compiled in 1698 (dates on pages 334a, 401), contains arithmetic, based on E Cocker's ‘Arithmetick’, with some rules for extracting roots by algebra and logarithms; "the doctrine of decimall fractions takne out of Mr. Coker's Decimall Arithmetick", (page 156); and 'the doctrine of plain triangles, or ... plain trigonometry' (page 334a), with rules for ascertaining heights, etc., with instruments.The words 'Heir endeth so much of the arithmetick as a souldier ought...

Manuscript containing directions for various dances.

Scope and Contents The contents are as follows: directions for dancing quadrilles, waltzes, reels, and country dances: 'Contre-danses à Paris, 1818' (folio 1); 'Country Dances' (folio 49); 'A selection of reel steps or steps for setting, 1818'. The paper is watermarked 1820 and later. Additions dated 1849 occur on folios 10, 36-37. 'Note, 1818' (folio 12) gives an account of the introduction of the French waltz and quadrille into England after the Napoleonic War and of an incident which led to the disrepute of...
