Hector MacIver taught in the Royal High School in Edinburgh from 1945 to 1966; he was appointed Principal Teacher of English in 1947. Apart from his teaching, MacIver was particularly interested in drama, and regularly produced the school's plays, some of which were, with his encouragement, written by pupils. He also advised the editor of the school magazine, ‘Phaeton’, which he was instrumental in founding.

These papers cover every aspect of Hugh Elliot's official activities during his embassy at Naples and subsequently at Palermo, 1803-1806. In addition to normal diplomatic affairs, they deal extensively with naval operations in the Mediterranean and with military campaigns in southern Italy, particularly Calabria.

Scope and Contents James Halliday (1927-2013) played a pivotal role in stabilising the SNP in the 1950s. He replaced Dr Robert D. McIntyre as chairman of the party in 1956, thus becoming the youngest chairman at the age of 28. However, this promotion was not devoid of problems as internal divisions had to be overcome.
