Alexander de Forbes (c.1380-1448) was created the 1st Lord Forbes around 1440, the Lords Forbes of Pitsligo were descended from Sir William Forbes, brother of Alexander. Don Paterson's literary papers consist mainly of notebooks and poetry files in which his meticulous planning, working and reworking of the poems is evident.
