Born in Orkney, Florence Marian McNeill worked in London for the Association for Moral and Social Hygiene from 1913 to 1917. She wrote and lectured on a variety of subjects, and was an active member of the Scottish National Party and the Saltire Society, but is best known for her books on Scottish cookery and folklore.

James Leslie Mitchell is best known for his Scottish novels, ‘Sunset song’ (London, 1932), ‘Cloud Howe’ (London, 1933) and ‘Grey granite’ (London, 1934), published under the pseudonym 'Lewis Grassic Gibbon', but he also wrote essays, biographies, and a study of South American history, ‘The conquest of the Maya’ (London, 1934).

Whilst there are no diaries or address books as such, most of the notebooks have been used for these purposes to some extent, with lists of contacts and correspondents and journal entries throughout. Very few of the notebooks in this series have been used for just one purpose, and most contain journal entries, sketches, draft letters, musings and reflections, and drafts of Alasdair Gray's version of 'The divine comedy'.
