Scope and Contents

A scrapbook of ephemera, news cuttings and photographs, containing information and illustrations of pipers and bagpipes mainly in Scotland, Ireland and Northumberland. Most of the material bears no date, but some items are dated 1929-1932. A copy of James Robertson's 'The Highland Bagpipe' is thought to date from [ca. 1935]. Among the photographs are some of Gilbert Askew himself holding Highland and Northumbrian pipes respectively.

Dates: 1929-1935 and undated.

Content Description

A collection of papers of Gilbert Askew (1893-1950), numismatist and expert on the Northumbrian bagpipe. It contains correspondence and press cuttings concerning Askew's published works 'The bibliography of the bag-pipe', 'Two sets of miniature bagpipes in the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland' and 'The bagpipe in Early Britain', and material collected for an unpublished work entitled 'The bagpipe in England'.
