Scope and Contents

William Clydesdale was a Glasgow character and a fellow student of Thomas Muir, the political reformer (note inside front cover).

The commonplace book contains satirical, comic, and reflective verses by Clydesdale in Scots and English, some dated 1823, a few anecdotes, and annotations by Peter Mackenzie, author of ‘The life of Thomas Muir’ (Glasgow, 1831).

Scope and Contents From the Fonds:

The collection consists of manuscripts on a wide variety of subjects, many copied from manuscript or printed works, and chiefly dating from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Among them are some account-books, diaries, and other manuscripts of family interest (including a few concerning the 2nd Earl of Buckinghamshire, father of the 6th Marchioness of Lothian), but very few letters.

Scope and Contents One of the most important sections is that on poetry (folios 1-18). Included here (folio 1) is an anonymous translation into English made in ?1710 of George Buchanan's ‘Francisci Valesii et Mariae Stuartae regum Franciae et Scotiae, epithalamium’. An interesting and anonymous ballad (folio 8) is called 'The Westland Letany', being a satire on the misgovernment of Scotland by Lauderdale, written circa 1673. Scope and Contents From the Fonds:

Robert McLellan (1907-1985) was born near Lanark and educated at Bearsden and Glasgow University. In 1938 he married and moved to Arran, where he spent the rest of his life, except for a period of service in the Royal Artillery, 1940-1946. His most important literary works were plays, but he also wrote poetry, short stories, and books on Arran.
