Scope and Contents

A small number of Mòd programmes and texts of Gaelic songs written down by Farquhar Macintosh. The Mòd programmes are: An Comunn Gàidhealach, 'Mòd 1956: Earrann na h-Oigridh'; An Comunn Gàidhealach, 'Orain-aon-neach leabhar IX, Mòd 1956, Na Leargaidh Ghallda; An Comhlan Gaidhealach, Knightswood and District Highland Association, Ninth Annual Juvenile Mod, 25 January 1958 (at which Macintosh was an adjudicator).

The Gaelic songs texts, in Macintosh's hand, are:

Two separate single sheets containing a song beginning 'Chunnaic mi na feadagan' and Sorley MacLean's poem 'A nighean a' chùil ruaidh òir'.

Three sheets on headed note paper from the Broadford Hotel, Skye, containing "Oran a' Ghramophon" (beg. 'Gur e mise th' air mo shàrachadh / 'S mi tàmh anns a' bhaile seo', 4 stanzas of 4 lines, the last stanza incomplete), untitled song beg. 'Thoir mo shoraidh null thar chuantan' (4 stanzas of 4 lines), song headed 'Teann a nall 's thoir dhomh do làmh' (4 stanzas of 4 lines, the refrain not written down), fragments of two other songs.

A notepad containing notes on miscellaneous Highland-related subects as well as a section of Gaelic songs, some of which are possibly unrecorded or unpublished:

Kenneth MacLeod, "Maighdeanan na h-àirigh", beginning 'Thug mi 'n oidhche raoir 'smi bruadar', 3 stanzas of 4 lines, with 4-line refrain beginning 'Thug mi 'n oidhche raoir 'san àirigh'.

Donald Ross, "Leannan mo ghràidh", beginning 'B'òg chuir mi eòlas air leannan mo ghràidh', 3 stanzas of 4 lines with 4-line refrain beginning 'Cailin mo rùin-sa is leannan mo ghràidh'. With a note: "N.B. Received from Donald M."

"Traditional song (unpublished)", beginning 'A Pheigi a ghràidh 's tu dh'fhàg mi buileach gun sunnd". By Ruairidh Campbell, with a note: "I goe this version from Donald Macphail (Lochailort, July 1949). He thinks the author is Donald Macintyre, the Uist bard."

Livingstone, Duncan, "Muile nam Mòr-bheann", beginning 'Am Muile nan craobh tha mhaighdean bhanail'. 5 stanzas of 4 lines numbered 1-4 and 6, with a gap indicated for the 5th.

"Òran na maighdinn mhara: Iain Camshron", beginning 'A mach air bhàrr nan stuadh ri gaillinn'. 3 stanzas of 4 lines, with 4-line refrain beginning 'Hùbha is na hoireann hùbha'. With the tune written down in sol-fa notation on the verso.

"Mar a dh'iarrainn", beginning 'Is truagh nach robh mise it tusa o chialain 's mo ghaol far an iarrainn'. 4 stanzas of 4 lines, with refrain beg. 'Hilliù ho hilliù ho hilliù horo éile'. With a note: "Chan eil fhios againn air ùghdar an òrain seo ach 's dòcha gur e Uilleam Ros a bh' ann." But probably not by William Ross.

"Marbhrann", beginning 'Nuair a ràinig mi 'm baile / Cha robh aighear no ceòl ann'. 8 stanzas of 2 lines, with 3-line refrain beginning 'S na hua ho hua ho'. With the tune written down in simplified sol-fa notation, and a note: "Fhuair mi an t-òran seo o Derick Thomson."

Untitled song, beginning 'Gur ann an toiseach a' gheamhraidh / Rinn mi seòladh air a' bhàta'. 8 stanzas of 4 lines, with 4-line refrain beginning 'Hi ho nighean hu ho nighean'. With note: "Fhuair mi an t-òran seo bho Lachlainn, bràthair mo sheanamhair."

Untitled song beginning ''S fhuair mi do litir Di-màirt / 'S ro mhath a dh'aithnich mi do làmh'. 7 stanzas of 4 lines, with refrain beginning 'Hi ho ro mo ghruagach dhonn / 'S ann ort fhéin a dh'fhàs an loinn'. With note: "Rinneadh an t-òran a leanas le Iain Grannda, athair Dhomhnaill Ghrannda, am Mìobost."

Untitled song, beginning ''S mór a tha de aodach / Air caileagan 'ga shlaodach'. 3 stanzas of 8 lines.
