Thomas Carlyle’s comments thereon and his own reminiscences of his wife begin on page 126. Inserted at pages 1 and 2 are two small sheets of manuscript by Carlyle, numbered (1) and (5), endorsed ‘Rudiments of Preface’. (5) is dated November 1868.
