At the Disruption of 1843, the missionaries in India of the Church of Scotland and in Kaffraria of the Glasgow Missionary Society adhered, almost without exception, to the Free Church. New missions were later founded in Nagpur (1845), Jaina (1855), Santalia (1871), Livingstonia (1875), and Aden (1886). The union in 1876 with the Reformed Presbyterian Church brought with it the New Hebrides mission.

The 'Elegantiae Simulae Inusitatae...' begins on folio 4, and the 'Sententiae Celebriores...’ begins on folio 24. The same hand has added extracts from Gellius and Ennius and notes on Roman measures and money on folios 1-3, and calculations on folios 11-17. The name William Paterson and the dates 1704 and 1707 appear on front and back covers. There are some notes in Lord Milton's hand on folios 17-18. Leaves have been torn out at various points.
