The object of the Society was to provide substitutes for its members balloted for the militia. It cooperated with similar societies in the West of Scotland. From 1831 it was virtually defunct and in 1867 it was wound up. The volume contains several independent sheets: letters, printed forms with manuscript notes, and other papers.

Minutes, accounts and members' lists, 1948-1954, of the Edinburgh Opera Company. The Edinburgh Opera Company was founded in 1920 and was in existence until 1981. The first meeting in the minute book, 25 October 1948, records the reconstitution of the Company with new links to the Edinburgh Corporation Education Committee, which had started a new Institute of Music at Broughton High School.

Excerpts from Sir Walter Scott’s marginal notes in books at Abbotsford, compiled by his sons Walter and Charles in 1832., 4th quarter of 18th century-early 19th century.
The excerpts are written in an old book containing Minutes of the first meeting of the First Committee appointed to examine Scottish Forms of Process, signed by Walter Scott, 1809 (folio 43). Several sheets are cut out; others are sewn in.

This collection dates mainly from after 1988, when John McGrath and Elizabeth MacLennan resigned from the company which they had established, with David MacLennan, in 1973. Following the funding crisis in 2006, the company had to leave its base in the STUC building in Glasgow, and it was at this point that much of the material in this accession was presented to the National Library of Scotland.
