A copy of J G Crawford's rules, probably by Captain Henry Harper, who served his apprenticeship from 1832 to 1837. It is followed (folio 46 verso) by miscellaneous rules, mathematical calculations, and notes chiefly concerned with the measuring of cargoes for revenue purposes. There are also brief notes on Harper's career (folio 50) and on that of an official in the customs, 1848-1850 (folio 71).

The Saint George Quartet Club was founded in 1874 to encourage the performance and appreciation of chamber music, principally for strings. The Club had a large repertoire and seems generally to have kept abreast of developments in music until at least the First World War. Around 1938 it was taken over by the Edinburgh Society of Musicians.

The collection consists of manuscripts on a wide variety of subjects, many copied from manuscript or printed works, and chiefly dating from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Among them are some account-books, diaries, and other manuscripts of family interest (including a few concerning the 2nd Earl of Buckinghamshire, father of the 6th Marchioness of Lothian), but very few letters.
