He succeeded to the estates of Hailes on the death of his father in 1849, when he assumed the name of Dalrymple. He was created a baronet in 1887, and a Privy Councillor in 1905. Scope and Contents

Margaret Anna Dalrymple, Lady Newhailes, was the first wife of Sir David Dalrymple, 2nd Baronet of Newhailes. The daughter of Sir Mark John MacTaggart-Stewart, 1st Baronet of Southwick, Lady Dalrymple was divorced from Sir David in 1919 and married Sir Patrick Graham Blake, 5th Baronet of Langham in 1925. She died in 1962.
