Scope and Contents

At the end, on two sheets bound into the volume (folios 182-183), are sketches of coats of arms in trick, including, among others, those of the Heptarchy and of the three English Kings of Arms, Garter, Clarenceux, and Norroy. With the sketches are notes about the disposition of the shields on a building which may have been the old College of Arms.

The papers include a copy of a letter of Adam Ferguson (afterwards Professor) from Vilvoorde Camp, 1745 (folio 25); an account of the Sepoy mutiny at Vellore of 1806, by an eyewitness (folio 97); notes on Rhodes ‘to save Sir Walter the trouble of looking out for information’, with sketches, by Sir William Gell, 1832 (folio 147); and notes on Indian manners supplied by Colonel James Ferguson for the “Surgeon’s daughter” [?1827] (folio 165).

The contents are compiled from official and other documents, and consist of: rolls of service of the officers, non-commissioned officers, and men who went to the Crimea; rolls of promotions, honours, and awards; detailed returns of the state and strength of the battalion, including medical reports; a journal of the campaigns and battles in which the battalion took part.

The notebook is illustrated with occasional sketches, ink and watercolour, and with two military poems.
