The terms, `Gaelic version` or `English version` refer to the original manuscript texts produced by (`transcribed by` or `told to`) one of his team of collectors or by Campbell. Unless stated otherwise, all English versions of the tales and textual notes are the work of Campbell.

The volume is inscribed 'N[o]. I' on the upper board and 'Manuscript Guitar Music Misses Douglas. Cavers' at folio ii verso.
The contents list is at folio i verso.

The volume is inscribed 'No II' on the upper board and 'N[o] II M.S. Music Cavers' at folio ii.
The leaves are watermarked 1839, except folio ii is watermarked 1835.
Music book, 'N[o] XVII', of the daughters of James Douglas containing songs by Mendelssohn and other German composers, and some Italian songs., Early 19th century-mid 19th century.
The volume is stamped ‘Music’ in gold capitals and inscribed 'N[o] XVII' on the upper cover.
One of the Italian songs is dated 1846 (folio 11 verso) and another 1848 (folio 10 verso). A printed Italian song is tipped in inside the front cover (folio i) and a contents list at folio 1.
Two leaves have been cut out after folio 11.
Music book, 'N[o] XXI', of the daughters of James Douglas containing songs chiefly in English., Early 19th century-mid 19th century.
The music book is inscribed 'N[o] XXI' on the upper cover and the contents list is written inside the front cover.
Music books, apparently a fragment of a collection of at least twenty-one volumes, all apparently the original property of the daughters of James Douglas of Cavers (succeeded 1815).
MSS.21784-21790 are numbered at the front, and the contents of MSS.21784-21785, 21787-21792 are preceded by contents lists, all apparently in the same hand.
From the four dates visible, the collection would appear to have been in the possession of the Misses Douglas about or somewhat before the mid-19th century.

Most of the contents lists refer to the Bound Folio MSS. (MSS.24538-24546) and the Pocketbook series numbers 1-28 (MSS.24547-24571). Includes Monboddo number 219.

By John Dunlop’s own description (folio 2 recto) ‘This menu is very imperfect and cursory; referring only to a small portion of the descents in the M.S.S.’ The notebook relates to the following manuscripts only: MSS.9274-9285, 9287-9288.
