Scope and Contents

The journal being a record of Alexander Carlyle activities whilst in London as the General Assembly's commissioner to endeavour to procure an exemption on the part of the Scottish clergy from the window-tax (folio 5 verso). Preceded by an account of his expenses on the journey there (folio 2).

Scope and Contents From the Series:

Sir Charles Dalrymple Fergusson (1800-1849), was the eldest son of Sir James Fergusson, 4th Baronet of Kilkerran, and Jean, second daughter of Lord Hailes. He inherited Newhailes in 1838 on the death of his aunt, Christian Dalrymple, when he assumed the additional surname of Dalrymple. Sir Charles was admitted Advocate in 1822, and in 1829 married Helen, daughter of David Boyle of Shewalton, Lord President of the Court of Session.

Scope and Contents From the Fonds: The papers cover the period from 1750 to 1945, but the bulk of the collection belongs to the lifetime of Sir George Henry Scott-Douglas, 4th Baronet, who succeeded his father as a minor in 1836 and died in 1885. During his minority and absences abroad with the army, his affairs were in the hands of a trustee, but after his return in 1851, Sir George took a keen interest in the running of his estates, as is evident from the long series of detailed factory accounts and correspondence....
