Scope and Contents Following the death of Lord Byron in April 1824, various interested parties met at the house of John Murray on 17th May of that year. These included John Murray [II], Thomas Moore, John Cam Hobhouse and representatives of both Lady Byron and Augusta Leigh. After a discussion, the group decided that the manuscript containing the memoirs of Lord Byron should be burned and they proceeded to do so in the drawing room fireplace. Scope and Contents

The proofs and printed edition of this work by John Cam Hobhouse, Baron Broughton, detail two of the most controversial moments in life and reputation of Byron - the breakdown of his marriage and the burning of his memoirs. The work was originally privately printed in 1870, but then included in 'Recollections of a long life', which was edited by Lady Dorchester (the daughter of Hobhouse) and published by Murray between 1909 and 1911.
