The journal is illustrated by water-colour drawings of national costume (folios iv verso-v verso) and scenery (folios 93-94 verso, 143, 152 verso), pen-and-ink sketches of the ladies with their guides and mules (folios 60, 82 verso), maps and plans of mountain ranges (folios vi verso, 57, 138, 153), and an engraving of Dover Castle (folio 7). According to an index of illustrations (folio x verso) some drawings are missing. There are also lists of places visited in chronological order (folio vii) and in alphabetical order (folio ix), a list of the heights of mountains (folio xi), and miscellaneous notes (folio xii). The journal is called 'Volume 1st' and the record is obviously incomplete, but the other volumes appear not to have survived. Reference is also made in this volume to other writings of Mrs Beecroft on France and on Switzerland.
