Copies, early 18th century, of letters and memoirs of covenanters.
Scope and Contents
The contents of the manuscript are as follows:
(i) Letters, 1675-1677, of the preacher John Welwood. They are mostly addressed to Elizabeth Collace and her sister Katharine Ross, but there are also a few to the covenanter Richard Cameron. The letters, which are not in strict chronological order, are chiefly religious in nature, but there are occasional mentions of the persecutions in Fife, the Merse and Teviotdale. (Folio 1.)
(ii) Memoirs of Katharine Ross. The manuscript does not differ greatly from the printed text except in the inclusion of a note identifying one of the characters as the minister of Auldearn (folio 35 verso). It includes another note which appears in the printed text, where the author had left a blank in her original manuscript (folio 66). Both this and sections (iii)-(iv) are very closely related to Adv.MS.34.5.19, folios 185-284. (Folio 27.)
(iii) Notes by Jean Collace on the deaths of her sisters Katharine and Elizabeth in 1697 and 1704. Those concerning Katharine form the basis of the first part of the epilogue in her printed ‘Memoirs’. (Folio 79.)
(iv) `Some short remembrances of the Lord`s kindness to me, and his work on my soul for my own use`, being a religious memoir by Jean Collace. Most of it refers to the period 1675-1676, and it occasionally mentions the family`s movements in Fife and Morayshire, the conventicles and persecutions, and the texts of the field-preachers` sermons. (Folio 79 verso.)
Sections (ii)-(iv) are in the same hand.
