Manuscript of 'The Gododdin' by William Owen Pughe, with facing English translation, and other papers.
Scope and Contents
The manuscript was written during 1784-1785 (see pages iii, 198) by William Owen Pughe (1759-1835), co-editor of ‘The Myvyrian Archaiology of Wales’. For further transcripts of the work in his hand see the following National Library of Wales manuscripts: 13240 B; 21281 E, page 231, column a; Erfyl Fychan papers.
The contents are as follows.
(i) Line from an ‘awdl’ ascribed to Casnodyn: ‘Cyn glas ved cyn glassu vyggran’. ‘The Myvyrian Archaiology of Wales’, volume 1, page 431. (Page i.)
(ii) Note by John Williams (i.e. John William Prichard) of Plas-y-brain, Anglesey, dated 2 January 1790, requesting ‘Darluniad Cymru’; this may be one of Owen Pughe’s maps of Wales, dated 1788, published in Warrington’s ‘History of Wales’. (Page v.)
(iii) Cynddelw. ‘Gwelais ar vorwyn vwyn vawr rydig’, 8 lines. ‘The Myvyrian Archaiology of Wales’volume 1, page 252. With pen-and-ink drawing. (Page xix.)
