Scope and Contents

This collection contains additional papers relating to Edith Simon's career as an artist and writer, as well as some early juvenilia, embracing her illustration and creative writing. The collection also contains a series of papers relating to her husband, the noted geneticist, Dr. Eric Reeve, documenting his university studies at the University of Oxford, his subsequent war service, and his later career at the University of Edinburgh.

The broad scope of the collection may be summarised as follows:

Box 1 Correspondence relating to Eric Reeve.

Box 2 Early writings of Edith Simon.

Box 3 Papers concerning Edith's art and writing careers.

Box 4 Papers concerning the publication of 'Moderation Be Damned: Edith Simon', a posthumous series of essays on the life and work of the artist.

Box 5 Correspondence of Edith and Eric Reeve, with notable files to Edith's sister Inge Goodwin (née Simon).

Boxes 6-9 Papers concerning Eric Reeve's university studies, war experience, his career at the University of Edinburgh; accompanied by a folder of sketches, including anatomical studies.

Boxes 10-46 Photographic material documenting Edith Simon's artistic career and individual artworks and exhibitions. Includes photograph albums, slides, contact sheets, negatives, and video and audio recordings.

Papers were summarily sorted into folders and rehoused in numbered archival boxes in October 2022 for long-term preservation, following initial receipt and storage by the NLS Archives & Manuscript Division in 2017. No further interventions have taken place and no attempt has been made to interpret the papers beyond these initial general aggregations. The following box listing relates to the individual boxes as created by NLS Archives & Manuscript Division personnel. Where files have retained titles used originally by Edith Simon, her husband Eric Reeve, or their daughter Antonia Reeve, this has been noted in the relevant descriptions.
