Scope and Contents

The collection is known both as the `Denmilne State Papers` and the `Denmilne Collection`. Less formally it is often referred to as the `Denmilne Manuscripts`.

Letters, chiefly of the first two Viscounts Melville and other Dundases.

Scope and Contents Many of the letters appear to have been addressed to John Wauchope, Writer to the Signet. Those of the 1st Viscount Melville are mainly drafts. The letters deal, among other matters, with family affairs, Scottish politics and appointments, the defence of Scotland, the affairs of the sons of the 3rd Earl of Aberdeen, and work done by Sir Francis Chantrey.
