Scope and Contents From the Series: The papers consist of the transcriptions, arrangements, and research notes compiled by John Murdoch Henderson between the mid 1920s and his death in 1972. Henderson's particular interest was in music for the Scottish fiddle, and in addition to extensive work on the older sources of such music, he was an authority on the compositions of his contemporaries, who seem frequently to have sought his advice. Scope and Contents

Made-up volume, consisting of gatherings of leaves bound up inside two sheets of cardboard.

A bifolium appears to have been removed and replaced by four somewhat smaller leaves (folios 59-62).

The march at folio 6 verso is dated 1901, and that of folio 7 verso was doubtless composed in 1902. Many of the other pieces are dances.

The contents are as follows: (i) Negative photostats of the manuscript full score of Bizet's 'Valse avec Choeur' in G major; with other fragments (Paris Conservatoire MSS 428 and 431) (folio 1); (ii) Photocopies of the autograph manuscripts of pieces, 1943-1954, by Percy Grainger: Two Faroese dances, and 'Walking tune' for piano duet, 'Bristol town' for piano 6 hands, and "The widow's party" for piano solo prepared for the projected "Music lover's Grainger" (folio 79).

The first 22 pieces (folios 1-37) appear to have been part of a series of at least 25 pieces.

The 'Royal Wedding Quadrille' (folio 38) is dated 1893. Folio 25 is written on the verso of a bill dating from 1910 or later.

Scope and Contents The title is taken from folio ii.The manuscript contains many Scottish and some other dance tunes arranged in simple treble notation, followed by an index (page 181).The tunes , which are taken from ‘Caledonian pocket companion’ by James Oswald ([circa 1745-1760]), ‘[First] collection of strathspey reels’ by Niel Gow (1784), and several other printed sources, are numbered in pencil in another hand as far as page 47, and other markings are added in pencil elsewhere....
