Gairdyn manuscript: a collection of songs, marches, minuets, sarabands, country dances, etc., 1710, 1729, 1735, undated.

Scope and Contents

Of most tunes, only a few bars are given. On folio iv are verses beginning 'Than what shall be done with this traitor in grain' and 'When fierce Renegado cam first to the toun'. A short 'Inventar of household plenishing' appears on folio 42 verso. The dates 1710, 1729, and 1735 occur on folios 40, 40 verso, and 51.

A portion has been partly chewed by mice (folios 14-20), but half the table of contents remains (folio 20) and the name Archibald Murray (folio 20 verso).

The anonymous prelude on inverted folios 11 verso-12 is that attributed in MS.9454, folios 3 verso-4, to [Davis] Mell.

Scope and Contents The music-book is made up of pages watermarked 1794. The volume contains ballads, dances, and pianoforte pieces from Scotland and various European countries (passim), hymns (folios 22 verso-31), and vocal exercises and scales (folios 22, 32 verso-33 verso, 70-71 verso). Among the more extended pieces are extracts for pianoforte from Méhul's 'Jeune Henri' of 1797 (folio 67 verso), and from an opera 'Paul and Virginia', possibly that produced in London in 1800; and 'Favourite dances at...

The music book contains a contents list at folio i verso.

Tipped in at folios 73-78 are six leaves containing the words and music of additional songs. A fragment of a printed sheet containing the words of a song is tipped in at folio v.

The first two manuscripts are of piobaireachd; the second two, of marches, strathspeys, reels, jigs, and other dance music.

According to Angus Mackay's inscription in his Seaforth Manuscript (MS.3744) he was at work on these manuscripts between 1826 and 1840, taking the tunes down from his father's canntaireachd.
