Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows. (i) Letters, 1935-1959, of A Walter Marsden, chiefly concerning his own activities. Also included is an essay by Marsden on James Leslie Mitchell, with reminiscences of their meeting, and typescripts of some of Marsden's poems (folio l); (ii) Correspondence, 1935-1960, of John Muriel, the author 'John Lindsey'. Scope and Contents

Fleeming Jenkin was Professor of Engineering at the University of Edinburgh and Stevenson’s tutor in that capacity. Stevenson showed little aptitude or interest in engineering but the two men became firm friends. After Jenkin’s sudden death in 1885, his widow Anne asked Stevenson to write a memoir of her husband and this correspondence arose from that connection.

Scope and Contents Italian patriot and poet Ugo Foscolo (1778-1827) arrived in England in 1816 and quickly became part of a large literary circle. This included the publisher, John Murray [II]. Foscolo wrote some articles for the 'Quarterly Review' as well as other periodicals to help relieve his financial woes. Scope and Contents From the Fonds:

The Mure of Caldwell papers are chiefly of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Some of the earlier papers belonged to the Mures of Glanderston, the two families having been united in 1710 by the succession of William, 4th Laird of Glanderston, to the Caldwell estates.
