The manuscripts, proofs and notebooks here reflect the interests and writing of Whitwell Elwin. There are items relating to Alexander Pope, William and Charles Napier, James Boswall and Samuel Johnson, and William Cowper among others. Many of these items relate to the work of Whitwell for the 'Quarterly Review' and his other published works, including 'Some XVIII century men of letters'.

Scope and Contents From the Series: Purves does not seem to have altered the figures of the rental after compiling his work in 1667, but he did expand the section of the introduction on the Court of Exchequer. The final form which the work took in 1681 was published by D Murray Rose as ‘Revenue of the Scottish Crown, 1681’, from a manuscript in the British Museum (Addit. MS. 33,238). William Soutar's output of work, most of it produced during the last thirteen bed-ridden years of his life, is quite remarkable.
