“Swinton’s kirk MSS”, a collection of original 17th-century Scottish historical documents, and of copies, 18th century.
The papers appear to have belonged to Lord Swinton, and may be the collection of the Reverend Samuel Semple, Swinton’s maternal grandfather (cf. FES i, 172).
‘Tales from the people of Sutherland’: stories, beliefs, riddles, etc., collected by Miss Charlotte Louisa Dempster., 1859.
The volume contains entries by various writers, including John F Campbell of Islay, by whom there is an index (folio 2) and a sketch (folio 184).

Henry Frazer’s signature is on page 710.
There are additions throughout in various hands including that of David Deuchar, Seal Engraver, Edinburgh, who also compiled the indexes (cf. Adv.MSS.35.6.15-35.6.16). There are thirteen coats crudely emblazoned and a sketch of the seal of office of the Lyon King of Arms.

This volume describes the tour from 24 July to 10 August, with particular reference to his visit to Glasgow and of his stay on Arran.

This volume continues the account of Walker’s activities on Arran from 11 August. The return journey is then recounted with lengthy descriptions of Bute, Rothesay and Greenock.

This volume begins on 13 September, describing the last stage of the journey, his visit to Paisley in particular. The remainder of the volume contains as an Appendix, a `General Description of the Island of Arran` (folio 45), covering all aspects of Island life.

The hand appears to be that of George Chalmers’s nephew, James Chalmers.

The transcripts were made by John Dillon, Secretary of the Maitland Club, probably in 1812 (see folio 63 and watermark), the charter of Robert Mersar of Innerpeffray beginning on folio 61. They are followed by a short calendar (folio 65) and index, also by Dillon, on paper watermarked 1823.

The compilation of this list was based primarily on MS.4892. The gaps, mainly in the earlier portions, have been filled in as far as possible from Professor Alan Lang Strout's ‘Bibliography of articles in “Blackwood's Magazine”, 1817-1825’ (Lubbock, Texas, 1959), and from information supplied by him.
