The 2nd son of the 10th Lord Sinclair, James St Clair succeeded as titular 12th Lord Sinclair in 1750 on the death of his brother, who was attainted in 1715. In 1747 he married Janet, daughter of Sir David Dalrymple, 1st Baronet of Hailes, and widow of Sir John Baird, 2nd Baronet of Newbyth. He served with the Foot Guards in Gibraltar in...

Scope and Contents

In 1972 and following his move to Gairloch in 1976, Sydney Durward Tremayne was working on an autobiography which survives in several versions. It describes his childhood, his career in journalism, and his stormy relationship with his father; it also indicates the circumstances in which he wrote some of his poems.

Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows. (i) Chapters ix-xxii (last) of ‘A child's history of Scotland’, which was published (London, 1895) (folio 1); (ii) 'The life and death of Jeanne d'Arc the maid of France' which was published under the title ‘Jeanne d'Arc her life and death’ (London, 1896) (folio 65). Some of the sheets used are fragments, and some of these are stuck together to form composite sheets.

Scope and Contents Hume originally wrote out his lectures in bound notebooks, but over the years he revised, added, and deleted, and in many cases he rewrote pages or sections on separate sheets, and the original structure is usually destroyed. Sometimes the original version has survived alongside the new, sometimes it has not; some pages whose context has disappeared are collected in Adv.MS.81.6.32, which also contains a section on bankruptcy which Hume apparently later omitted (not printed in the Stair...
