The description of the manuscript in the folio catalogue (F.R.186) includes the reference: A.5.43.
‘History of the Kirk of Scotland after the Reformation’, covering the period from the Parliament of August 1560, to that of June 1633, in a seventeenth-century hand.
A note in an eighteenth-century hand (folio 1) suggests this is a manuscript copy of David Calderwood, ‘The true history of the Church of Scotland’, 1678; but, although there are striking textual similarities at various places, the text is by no means the same, and begins and ends at later dates. As many of the documents quoted in full by Calderwood are omitted, this may be an abridgement and continuation of Calderwood's work.

The title `Origo Episcopatus Dunelmensis` bears the date 1616, but the text is followed (folio 25 verso) by lists of bishops up to Richard Neile (1617-1628), deans from 1543 to 1620, and mayors from 1603 to 1627.

At the beginning of the volume is inserted a letter of James Ballantine, glass painter and song writer to the Dean of the Faculty of Advocates, 1865, giving an extract of John Castle`s will 1864, bequeathing the manuscript to the Advocates` Library. At the back of the volume are recorded financial statements concerning the monument. The rest of the volume is comprised of copies of reports, minutes of meetings and correspondence, 1832-1853.
