From Queen Ann`s Accession to the Throne to the Commencement of the Union of the two Kingdoms of Scotland and England in May 1707. With an Account of the Origin and Progress of the designed Invasion from France in March 1708. And some Short Reflections on the Ancient State of Scotland`, 1714, by George Lockhart of Carnwath., 1714, or after.
George Lockhart`s ‘Memoirs’ were published in 1714, and went through three editions in that year. The 2nd and 3rd editions contained the `Appendix`, which is included in this manuscript. The Introduction (pages xi-xxx) is omitted.
A note in George Chalmers` handwriting is recorded on folio 1: `N.B. The names are all written plainly in this fine and accurate MS. and no blanks.`

The manuscript can be dated between 1681 and 1686 from Wallace`s mention of the Stewards of Orkney (folio 53). From the inscription on folio 1, this was the manuscript of the `Account` sent to Sir Robert Sibbald (see ‘Description of the Isles of Orkney’, pages xvii-xviii).

A work intended as a universal history from the earliest times to the French Revolution, but which, from the 11th century onwards, is confined to the history of France. The text begins (folio 28) with a description of the work and material on the planetary system and world geography. It is preceded by geographical and chronological tables (folio 2). The work was compiled while Henry (1773-1820), a French army officer, was a prisoner of war near Jedburgh.

The manuscript, dated 1st March 1834, was the winning entry in a competition of the Highland Society of London for the best essay on the history of the Highland Clans. It is illustrated in pen and ink and in watercolours.
