The paper is watermarked 1827. The recipes are arranged alphabetically, and many of them are described as suitable for shops, tables, taverns or fairs. There are a few additions in another hand (page 145). A letter, 1924, concerning the manuscript is inserted.

This material does not appear to have been used by F J Child. Besides British ballads, it includes a note on Spanish ballads by George Tickner of Boston (folio 7), a letter of William Laidlaw (folio 15), a letter of Robert Jamieson, with translations of Danish ballads (folio 23), historical ballads and songs (folios 50-82), two versions of ‘Galatian’, and correspondence of Sir John Sinclair regarding the Gaelic song ‘Malli bheag Og’, 1819-1820 (folio 93).
Binding in which the 9th century French manuscript of the epigrams of Martial was previously bound., 13th century.
With the binding are:
(i) a letter, 1885, of Edward Maunde Thompson to W M Lindsay concerning the date of the original manuscript;
(ii) notes, circa 1885, in manuscript from the introduction to `M. Valerii Martialis Epigrammaton Libri`, by Ludwig Friedlaender, concerning the date of the manuscript; and,
(iii) 10 black and white photographs of the manuscript before the binding was disbound.
