William Soutar's output of work, most of it produced during the last thirteen bed-ridden years of his life, is quite remarkable. Apart from his regular and lively correspondence, and his poetry both in English and in Scots, he left a long sequence of diaries and journals, as well as a record of his dreams extending over more than twenty years.

Sydney Durward Tremayne, who was born in Ayr, worked for provincial newspapers before becoming a leader-writer for the ‘Daily Mirror’, the ‘Daily Herald’ and the ‘Sun’; he also published several small collections of poems. Apart from his autobiography, the papers do not concern his work as a journalist.

George Scott-Moncrieff wrote a number of plays, of which only ‘Fotheringhay’ was published (Edinburgh, 1953), although others were performed on the stage or broadcast. Most of the surviving typescripts are undated.

Some of the short stories were published in English and American magazines. There are two versions of 'Temper the Wind' (MS.27420, folios 51, 64), 'My shadow on the side of the tunnel' (MS. 27420, folios 128, 140), 'And always will be' (MS.27421, folios 39, 57) and 'Strange the way' (MS.27421, folios 180, 200). The versos of MS.27421, folios 119-141 contain parts of an early version of ‘The miracle at Cardenrigg’.

Robert McLellan (1907-1985) was born near Lanark and educated at Bearsden and Glasgow University. In 1938 he married and moved to Arran, where he spent the rest of his life, except for a period of service in the Royal Artillery, 1940-1946. His most important literary works were plays, but he also wrote poetry, short stories, and books on Arran.

Robert Garioch Sutherland was commissioned by Radio Forth to write and broadcast a light-hearted poem once a week, and he completed a series of a hundred such verses. They are not included in his ‘Complete poetical works’ (Edinburgh, 1983). The manuscript drafts were written on the backs of letters and circulars (the more important of which have been indexed), and other scrap paper.
