Scope and Contents

A draft letter, 8 leaves, to the editor of the 'Weekly Magazine', incomplete at end, defending the authenticity of Ossian's poetry. Referring to comments published in the 'Weekly Magazine' in January and August 1778. A neater copy of the same letter is at Acc.2152/58.

At the top of the first page, a later hand has written the date "Octr 24th 1836".

Scope and Contents Letter defending the authenticity of the poems of Ossian, in MacNicol's hand and signed "A Hebridean". Dated 1778 on the back in a different contemporary hand. A later hand adds the date "Oct.28th /36" at the top of the first page. An earlier draft of this letter is at Acc.2152/57.With a note on the back by John Francis Campbell of Islay, dated February 1871: "This contains a list of Gaelic poems which the Minister considers to be the originals of Ossian as published...

Scope and Contents A folder of loose sheets of various sizes, written in various hands, and mostly undated. 45 folios. The names of the scribes are identified where possible. The contents are:[Black Prince]. Poem entitled on docket "Black Prince", beginning ''N cuala tu Sheamais ruaig aite / Nan Uaislin achduineach armach'. At the head is written: 'S fad 's gairrid a rithis am Buinsgeal. Large single sheet, paper date 1825, folded lengthwise into a bifolium. See also the following two items....

Scope and Contents A collection of Gaelic songs and associated papers, brought together by the Rev. Donald MacNicol (1735-1802), minister of Lismore, and continued by his son Dugald (b. 1791), an army officer. The Gaelic songs are from a range of periods and include Ossianic verse, waulking songs and songs by contemporaries of the collectors, such as Dugald Buchanan, Donnchadh Bàn Macintyre and Seumas Mac Gille-Sheathanaich (Shaw).
