 Item
Identifier: MS.11991

Scope and Contents

From the Sub-Series:

The journals chiefly concern a prolonged residence of the 2nd Earl of Minto and his family in Vevey, Switzerland, but including a visit to Paris (February-March, 1830), and description of the constitutional crises preceding the revolution there. MS.11992 ('Monte Rosa Journal') is concerned largely with the successful third ascent of the Breithorn by the 2nd Earl and party (August 1830); the journal account of the climb was published substantially complete in ‘Alpine Journal’, volume xvi, 1892, pages 146-159, 224-237: for the expedition's significance see C E Engel, ‘Mountaineering in the Alps; an Historical Survey’, new edition (London, 1971), pages 79-80. Included also is evidence (folios 11-12, 75-76), reported by his son, Ambroise, of Michel-Gabriel Paccard's leading role in the conquest of Mont Blanc, for which see T Graham Brown and Sir Gavin De Beer, ‘The First Ascent of Mont Blanc’ (London 1957) pages 319-220.
