Scope and Contents

Scope and Contents

The papers and correspondence chiefly concern relations between Lord William Seymour and General Sir Edward Hutton, General Officer Commanding Dominion Militia, and to a lesser extent the raising of Canadian troops for South Africa. Appended (folio 291) is a memorandum prepared by Seymour in ?1903 giving a statement of his position in Canada, and of his disagreements with Hutton and the 4th Earl of Minto.

Scope and Contents At the end of the list (folio 52) is a statement signed by his executors (his sisters and brother-in-law) certifying that the Trustees of the National Galleries had selected the illuminated manuscripts (some of which are MSS.7122-7149) and the paintings. The list was compiled after Watson's death and written out by Alexander Dowell, auctioneer, Edinburgh, who recorded the Trustees' refusal of the printed books and their acceptance of the illuminated manuscripts and paintings at folios 38...
