Scope and Contents

Gaelic songs assembled by Rev. Donald MacNicol and his son Dugald, containing Ossianic poetry, versions of the spiritual songs of Dugald Buchanan, and songs of Donnchadh Bàn Macintyre and other poets contemporary with the collectors, not all of them identified. Most of the material is in the form of single sheets or sheets folded into small booklets. With a few items of correspondence.

Gaelic verse mostly of Badenoch poets, collected in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and formerly held in the Cluny Charter Chest.

Scope and Contents A collection of Gaelic verse, mostly of poets from the Badenoch area. It was written down in the late 18th century, with some later additions at the end. Most of the songs were published by Thomas Sinton in his article "Gaelic poetry from the Cluny charter chest", 'Transactions of the Gaelic Society of Inverness' XXIII (1898-1899), pp. 247-281 (referred to below as "Sinton, TGSI"), and again in 'The Poetry of Badenoch' (Inverness 1906) by the same author.The collection was...

Scope and Contents

A notebook compiled by John Tolmie and marked "I Songs" on the cover; 33 folios. Containing mostly texts of songs in English or Scots, with humourous, often Scottish- or Irish-related themes. Most of these are copied by hand, but some are cut out from newspapers and pasted in. Undated, with the exception of the song on ff. 28v-29v, not in John Tolmie's hand, which is dated 1904. The song "The wedding of Shon Maclean" (ff.11-12) includes the melody in tonic sol-fa notation.

Scope and Contents A small notebook entitled at the front in red ink: "Gaelic songs, collected by A.M.C. Tolmie". The title was subsequently expanded to read "English and Gaelic songs ... Campbeltown Argyllshire". Alexander Tolmie became assistant minister and then successor at the first charge at Campbeltown in 1889.
