Scope and Contents From the Fonds: The papers cover six centuries worth of family and estate papers of the Forbes, the Stuart Forbes, and the Trefusis families. Alexander de Forbes (c.1380-1448) was created the 1st Lord Forbes around 1440, the Lords Forbes of Pitsligo were descended from Sir William Forbes, brother of Alexander. The title was created in 1633 for Alexander Forbes (d.1636). His descendant Alexander Forbes, 4th Lord Forbes of Pitsligo (1678-1762) forfeited his estates following his support for the Jacobites in...

There are also a number of portraits and studies of flowers. Two of the sketches are dated 1863 and most of the watercolours are titled. At the end of the volume several playing cards and a sheet of Chinese writing have been inserted.

He served in the Boer and First World Wars, retiring from the army in 1919 as honorary Staff Captain. As a member of the Royal Academy he specialised in portraits and subjects of a religious genre, his best-known work being...

On the front cover are James Augustus Grant's signature and the note 'This book was my guide through Africa. J.A. Grant'; on a leaf tipped in after page [ii] are pencil and watercolour sketches; on page 64 is a pencil sketch; and on pages 7 and 10 of the advertisements at the back are pencil notes.

The majority of the water-colours and drawings are landscapes, chiefly executed in the Edinburgh area or in Aberdour, Fife, during an extended visit to Scotland in 1809-1810, but there are also two drawings of fishwives, perhaps at Newhaven, and another entitled 'Bottling Whiskey' (see MS.8872).

Nine black and white photographs of landscapes now in the National Gallery of Scotland are also included.

According to a note inside the back cover, John Black was aged from 15 to 19 when he wrote the verses (1793-1797). There are a number of pen and ink and watercolour sketches.

There are three plans of 1803, undated, concerning Swintonmill, Berwickshire (numbers 5, 19-20). The estate of Keavil which adjoins that of Pitfirrane is represented by six plans of 1852, 1873, 1885, undated (numbers 10- 12, 14, 24-25). A commonplace book in two volumes compiled by David R Robertson and inscribed to his daughter Helen Stewart for her birthday: 'two volumes of memorials and happy memories; comprising notes and sketches of my father's and mother's country and also of our familiar holiday haunts'. The volumes contain poetry, paintings and drawings, illuminated lettering, and extracts from books on history and Scottish folklore.

The typed copy of the later journey was made in 1889 or 1890 for Elizabeth Burdon-Sanderson, whose signature dated May 1890 is at MS.20669, folio i.
