Scope and Contents

Many of the pieces are by Rene Mésangeau, and the manuscript closely resembles in its binding, watermark, and musical hand, a volume prepared after 1632 possibly for a pupil of Mésangeau and now in the Centre National de Recherche Scientifique in Paris - see ‘Oeuvres de René Mésangeau’ (Paris, 1971) edited by Monique Rollin. Other composers represented include Pinel (allemande, folio 33) and Dubut le père (courante, folio 54).

Dates: Mid 17th century.

This is one of several copies (another is British Library Hirsch MS. IV. 1633) of these pieces made for distinguished people. It is possible that this particular copy is in Nicola Matteis's autograph (see Michael Tilmouth, 'Nicola Matteis', in ‘Musical Quarterly’, January 1959, page 27).

On folios 114-117 (reversed) are figured bass parts of ten pieces from the opera 'Atis' by Jean Baptiste Lully.

Dates: 1681-1682.

Presentation autograph score of William Wallace's arrangements for voice and piano of six poems by Heinrich Heine. Dated 1888, and inscribed to "Mrs Young". Contains arrangements of the following: 1. Ein Jüngling liebt ein Mädchen; 2. Wenn zwei von einander scheiden; 3. Ich hab im Traume geweinet; 4. Ich stand in dunkeln Träumen; 5. Vergiftet sind meine Lieder; 6. Mädchen mit dem rothen Mündchen.
