At the beginning is a poem in French on the doctrines of the Church. The work is dedicated 'Germano compari nostro Joanni Manach', and bears the date 1759 at various points. Although Antoine Maillard's name appears as that of the author, it is not certain that this manuscript is in his hand.

Janet MacGregor gave the collection to her infant son Alexander (afterwards Chief) and died shortly after his birth. Her maiden name, Janet Oliphant, with the date 1743, is written inside the front cover; there are notes by Alexander on folios 1, 53 verso (one dated 1783).
A paper embroidered with the figure of the Paschal Lamb, found in the book, has been pasted in (folio 54).

The devotional writings begin with "Prayers I composed while in my Father's House in Inverury", 1713-1714 (page 1), and continue with commentaries, liturgical excerpts, prayers, versifications, etc. In another hand are copies of letters (page 315) of M G, who 'died the 9th of June 1717 in the 70th year of her age'.
