Scope and Contents It would appear to be a draft translation, and two stages can be discerned in its text. Books I-II (folios 1-31) are a first draft, written in a hand that is rather difficult to read, and extensively disfigured by large numbers of deletions and insertions; Book I Chapter 1 is misplaced at folio 21. Scope and Contents From the Fonds:

The collection consists of manuscripts on a wide variety of subjects, many copied from manuscript or printed works, and chiefly dating from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Among them are some account-books, diaries, and other manuscripts of family interest (including a few concerning the 2nd Earl of Buckinghamshire, father of the 6th Marchioness of Lothian), but very few letters.

The anonymous translation closely follows the Italian text. It differs from ‘Aristodemus; a tragedy’ (Edinburgh, 1838) an adaptation by Mrs Catherine Crowe (published anonymously).

Scope and Contents

The manuscripts had been bound into one volume by the 15th century. The contents are: (i) translation, by Constantinus Africanus, of 'De gradibus simplicum' by Isaac and the end of an unidentified work, with recipes added in later hands; (ii) Gerard, 'De modo medendi', with recipes and notes added by later hands; (iii) a work on digestion; (iv) seven works on medical subjects; (v) the end of an unidentified work on the degrees of medicine, with added recipes in French.
