Scope and Contents The Epistle to the Romans begins on the bottom half of folio 1. The top half of the folio contained the end of Acts, now erased, over which has been written in a cursive, sixteenth-century hand, 'All thepisties of Paule apostle followen writen 1409 into English'; in the margin the date 1209 is added, presumably a misreading of the indistinct date in the inscription.The latter part of the Prologue to the Epistle to the Romans is missing, as in British Library Egerton MS.618,...

Scope and Contents

The religious work is in 24 lessons; lessons 13-22 are on the Decalogue. At the end of the volume there are: 'Ce livre est écrit par un Papiste' (page 540); 'P. L. Du Pont' (folio ii verso). The manuscript may be a translation of part of a work by the Spanish Jesuit, Friar Luis de la Puente.

Scope and Contents From the Series:

Agnes Mackay was born and educated in Scotland, but spent much of her life in France. During the German Occupation, she lived in St Tropez with her cousin, Marion Melville, and they moved to Paris after the war. Her publications included poetry, biographies of Paul Valery and Arthur Melville, and critical works on art and literature.

Scope and Contents It was originally Ferguson`s intention to print Dutch text and English translation of all Dutch documents quoted, but this scheme had to be abandoned for reasons of space, and only the English translations were ultimately printed (Volume I, page xxxiii). Before this change of plan, the Dutch texts had been inserted into the appropriate places of the manuscript of Volume I and part of Volume II; the rest are preserved separately, Adv.MSS.81.3.15-81.3.23.Summaries and extracts of...

Scope and Contents Most of the manuscript is, with slight alterations, similar to the first printed edition of John Bellenden's translation (circa 1536), but in places it differs substantially from that and from other texts; it contains only chapters 2 and 3 of 'The cosmographie and discription of Albion' which precedes the main work, but is otherwise complete.Bellenden's chronicle is continued at folio 313 without a break by Robert Lindsay of Pitscottie's 'Historie and chronicles of Scotland' to...

Manuscript of `The Lief of the Holy Kinge St Edwarde the Confessor translated into Englishe by G.L. accordinge to the wrytten copye thereof`, being a translation of the work by Ailred of Rievaulx.

Scope and Contents

The work is preceded by a note on Ailred`s life and works, and is followed (folio 67) by a table of contents. The translator has noted a number of other sources for the history, such as John Bale, William of Malmesbury, and the Polychronicon; he has also made a few remarks, mostly opposing William Lambarde`s objections to the miracles, in the latter`s ‘Perambulation of Kent’.

Inside the front cover is the name Richard Chenery in a 17th-century hand.

Variations from the printed text are slight: the last paragraph of the General Introduction to Volume I and Volume I, pages xxxiv-xxxv are omitted; the `Note of Appointment of Adjutants, Quartermasters, Surgeons, etc. 1705-1782`, printed at the end of Volume II, appears before the main text of that volume. Of Volume III, only part i, the Rotterdam Papers, appears. There are no indexes.
